A week-long innovative celebration, ‘English Week’, was organised by the English department of St Mira’s College for Girls, Pune, from December 12, which captured the interest of the student community.
Celebrated every year, the ‘English Week’ started with a series of extra-curricular activities, planned and organised each day of the week, on the St Mira’s College campus.
The week began with a PowerPoint presentation contest and the topic was ‘Wide-open and inviting environment’. It was an encouraging beginning with over 11 entries for the contest, wherein a team of two students were allowed to collaborate on a presentation with a time limit of 10 minutes.
The HoD of the English department of St Mira’s college, Mohini Khot, said, “Since the theme was based on environment, the contest gave a huge scope to students to choose from various topics, which included climate change, waste management, rainwater harvesting, tsunami, insects and many more. The presentation combines computer, Internet and public speaking skills of the students.”
The next day was dedicated to humourous play reading contest, familiarising the students with the importance of drama in English. There were six participating groups. On the following days, western dance, cookery and flower arrangement contests were also held.
Expressing her team’s effort in organising the ‘English Week’, Khot said, “The week gave a platform to the students to showcase their talents. We are also planning an intercollegiate youth festival in January 2012.”
“It was an exhilarating week with lots of fun-filled activities. Participating in various competitions not only increased our knowledge bank, but also boosted our self-confidence,” said Shauna Moniz, a literature student.
The week ended with the inauguration of a book club, by professor R Raj Rao (HoD, English department, University of Pune). The first day of the book club started with a discussion on short stories by RK Narayan coinciding with the 10th death anniversary of the author.
