The sudden surge of COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra, particularly Mumbai has left Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to take stringent actions to curb the spread of the virus. Looking at the rising demand for hospital beds, 69 nursing homes were taken over by the BMC.

The BMC has added 2269 isolation beds, including 360 ICUs, in private hospitals for COVID-19 patients. As per the new norms, no private hospitals can directly admit patients and if found doing so will be penalised. This has been done to ensure no mildly symptomatic patients occupy hospital beds.

"All allotment of hospital beds shall be through 24 WARD WAR ROOMS only and therefore no one should try to procure positive COVID report directly from Testing Labs. Otherwise, they will find it difficult to get bed anywhere," BMC Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal said.

The step comes at a time when Mumbai on Sunday reported the highest number of new COVID-19 cases in a single day, adding 6,933 fresh infections, taking its overall tally to 3,98,724. With eight more deaths, Mumbai's fatality count rose to 11,653.

The Union Health Ministry on Tuesday listed out the 10 most-affected districts in India with the highest number of active COVID-19 cases. These districts include Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Delhi.

On Monday, Maharashtra added 31,643 fresh infections, taking the overall tally to 27,45,518 in the state.

BMC further plans to operationalize 1500 beds in jumbo centers this week. Currently, there are 3000 vacant beds across Mumbai, including 450 beds in private hospitals.

However, with Mumbai recording 6000-7000 cases daily beds in private hospitals are fast shrinking.

Meanwhile, A green corridor was created on Saturday morning for a truck with oxygen cylinders for COVID Global hospital, that got held up in traffic jams in Mumbra last week, helping it reach before stock depleted.
