MUMBAI: The situation in the city and other parts of Maharashtra that witnessed largescale violence following the defacement of a statue of the wife of Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray, Meenatai, is "under control", police said on Monday.

Unidentified persons had on Sunday defaced a statue of Meenatai at Dadar, sparking protest by party workers, who pelted stones at buses, torched vehicles and staged roadblocks across the state.

The police have prepared sketches of the three persons, allegedly involved in the desecration.

The sketches have been prepared based on information gathered from people residing near the area, where the incident took place, Police Commissioner A N Roy said.

Over 500 people, including 46 from Mumbai, were arrested for violence in the state.
