A family of three from Dubai, who arrived in Mumbai to make their grand presence felt at a wedding, loaded with gold and gifts, finally landed empty-handed at the venue.  Lost in the celebration mood, the family seemed to have missed the important responsibility of declaring the gold and other items they were carrying.

“Had they declared the gold and other items, their celebrations would have continued unhindered.  But considering their non-declaration, we had no option but to seize all they had,” said the additional commissioner of Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) Mahendra Pal.

Virendra Jangla and Devika Jangla, senior citizens, arrived in Mumbai with their son Sanjeev Jangla, 40, on Wednesday evening.

While they were passing through the green channel they were intercepted by the customs officials.

“They were found carrying gold worth Rs10 lakh, Rs73,000 in form of jewellery and gold coins,” said Pal. The Janglas were also carrying quite a few expensive perfumes as well as electronic goods in their hand baggage as well as checked-in baggage, possibly for gifts.

Though not with the gifts and the jewellery, the Janglas are lucky to have made it to the wedding. “They did not seem to be habitual carriers and so we did not arrest them,” said Pal.
