MUMBAI: Star-struck policemen who shook hands with Sanjay Dutt and hugged him on his release from Yerawada prison are facing the music.

Deputy chief minister RR Patil on Saturday ordered an inquiry into the incident that took place on August 23 when the actor was let off on interim bail. On Sunday, inspector general (prisons) Satish Mathur issued suspension orders to a policeman who had hugged Dutt and issued a show-cause notice to eight others who shook hands with him.

Jail guard Milind Dandi was suspended for embracing Dutt. The policemen issued  show-cause notices include constable Rajendra Kalewar and jail guards Satish Kadam, Shekhar Jadhav, Aslam Shaikh, Satish Gunge, Rajendra Gaikwad, Jagdish Wagh, Laxman Bibe.

Explaining the action, an official from Patil’s office said, “Dutt is a convict and the policemen on duty should have treated him like any other prisoner, rather than a celebrity.”
