The accused has been identified as Umar Maqbool Ahmed Shaikh, 25, a resident of Indra Nagar, Wagle Estate. He was in an inebriated state when he indulged in minor tiff with locals who had complained against him. He was taken to the police station and let off with a warning.

Angry for being taken to police station and harassed there, Shaikh allegedly poured petrol on the truck parked in one of the lanes close to the police station and set it on fire. He then fled from the spot.

"The drunkard was let off by the police and he was roaming around the locality with weapons to attack the locals. But when he did not find them, he set my truck on fire. Nine thousand coconuts have been damaged, including the truck," said Rajesh Jaiswal, the complainant.

"A major incident was averted as a cylinder-filling plant was located nearby. But the fire brigade acted fast and doused the flames. A housing colony is also located close by," added Jaiswal.

"We have arrested the accused under section 435 (mischief by fire or explosive substance with intent to cause damage to amount of one hundred or (in case of agricultural produce) ten rupees) of the Indian Penal Code," said HM Kshirsagar, investigating officer, Wagle Estate police station.

"The locals had complained of the accused creating nuisance in the locality. We took the complaint and let him off after a warning," said Kshirsagar.
