The Tulinj police have arrested two 'Spiderman' thieves from the Vasai-Virar region and recovered jewellery worth Rs3.6 lakh from them. The duo got the name for effortlessly scaling buildings and compound walls and breaking into homes.

Dilip Gupta alias Sonu (21) and Sandeep Jadhav (21), both residents of Naigaon, had broken into more than eight flats and stolen valuables from the residences after conducting recces.

The two, both of whom were illiterate, were active sprinters and climbers, with officers saying they were very particular about their daily exercise regimen and used to keep themselves fit and agile.

"The modus operandi of these youths was to climb the buildings either on pipes or enter the residences from the roofs," said an officer.

"After conducting the recce, they would confirm the target and break in and steal valuables, mostly gold.

"Living shabbily and exercising daily to keep themselves fit was their motto. They would regularly send money to their family members at their native place."

Another officer said, "With the help of information and tip-offs and diligently patrolling the streets we managed to track down one of the accused and found equipment with which he would break in."

"They have confessed to breaking into eight residences; we have recovered valuables worth Rs3,60,750 from them and arrested them for house break-in and theft," said assistant inspector Rakesh Sakharkar.

"We produced them in Vasai court and they have been remanded in police custody till August 5; we are investigating further."
