Contaminated well water kills 2, lands 5 in Thane hospital

Two people, including an 11-year-old boy, died and five others took ill after drinking contaminated water from a local well in Katkari pada in Wada taluka, Thane district.

Officials surveyed the area and found the water in a nearby lake, which was collected in the well, contaminated.

The deceased have been identified as Akshay Jadhav and Anjali Mukne, 55, while Vijay Tabale, 24, Dinesh Sawant, 10, Sandeep Wagh, 11, Sulbha Kanhat, 39, and her daughter Priyanka are undergoing treatment after they complained of vomiting and stomachache.

Dr Shyam Bhopatrao of the Government Hospital in Varle village said, “Health department officials surveyed the area and found that the lake next to the well was contaminated, leading to the spread of polluted water in the well.”

The place has been sanitised; also, the hospitalised villagers are recuperating, he added.
