Railway officials, however, disputed the fact that the incident happened at the level crossing gate and said that it happened elsewhere.

The accident happened despite the railways having posted RPF personnel to warn and monitor commuters crossing the tracks. The victim, who lost his right leg, was rushed to Sion hospital for treatment.

“You can now realise how important it is to have a bridge at this spot,” Terence D’Souza, a resident, said. Local MLA Mangesh Sangle has threatened to stop trains if the railways do not issue a no-objection certificate for the road over-bridge.

Chief spokesperson Vidyadhar Malegaonkar said that the over-bridge will be completed by June 15. “The railways have issued all relevant permissions for building the over-bridge. The ball now lies in the BMC and state’s court.”

High drama prevailed at Vikhroli on Monday as residents staged a four-hour protest demanding construction of a foot over-bridge at the site first, after a locomotive, on speed tests, ran over a commuter on February 10.
