The chief of naval staff, Admiral Nirmal Verma, on Sunday claimed the country’s coasts are secure and no terrorists can enter the country from the seas to carry out attacks like the one that took place in Mumbai on November 26, 2008.
He was delivering a lecture on ‘India’s role in the Indian Ocean: Strategic challenges and opportunities in the decade ahead’ in the city on Sunday.
The Indian Maritime Foundation (IMF) organised the event on its 17th anniversary. Air Chief Marshal (retd) H Mulgaonkar and president of IMF, Rajan Vir, were present.
Verma said a dozen ministries and eight other departments have come together for maritime policing. “The 26/11 terrorist attacks in Mumbai exposed vulnerability of our coasts. Since then, we have undertaken measures to ensure that no one can enter our country from the seas,” he added.
He said in order to strengthen the security of coastal areas, many steps like procurement of boats and maritime domain awareness among the fishing community have been initiated.
“Every fishing hamlet has been visited by the Coast Guard, the police and Navy officers to educate the communities. The project of smart cards for fishermen is underway, which will act as the identity of the fishermen who venture out to sea,” Verma said.
He said that after a gap of 17 years, an indigenous submarine has been commissioned. “Now the pace of procurement is remarkable and is adding to the strength of the Indian Navy,” he added.
He added, “Due to global warming, the Indian coasts will have to face natural calamities four times more than those faced by Asia-Pacific countries and 25 times more than what countries in Europe and America will have to face. We have to brace to meet such challenges.”
According to him, over 50,000 boats roaming the Indian maritime limit, making it difficult to keep tabs on each of them. “But with the implementation of the awareness programme for fishermen, our efforts are yielding good results. In case of a problem, they dial a helpline, 1093,” he said.
