The draft development plan (DP) of the city for the next 20 years seems to have started a political battle. Mumbai Congress chief Sanjay Nirupam on Monday demanded that chief minister Devendra Fadnavis apologise to the city's residents as he has cheated them by giving false assurances of scrapping the DP.

Nirupam demanded that Fadnavis scrap the DP, which is error-filled, in its entirety and ask the BMC to come up with a fresh plan.

On April 21, Fadnavis had announced that the DP would be scrapped to make way for a new one, but on April 23 the state issued a circular about making corrections in the existing DP. "The circular did not have any mention of scrapping the DP. It only said mistakes will be verified and corrected. How can the CM cheat people like this?" said Nirupam on Monday while addressing the media.

Congress Leader Narayan Rane, on the other hand, has alleged that Uddhav's PA has started contacting builders to help them change reservations in the DP for a price.

Rane said the scrapping of DP is only to facilitate the builder lobby and that the Shiv Sena is taking advantage of the situation. "Uddhav's PA is calling builders and giving them offers. He is assuring them help in facilitating crucial changes in the DP at a price," the Congress leader alleged.

However, Mumbai BJP chief Ashish Shelar was quick to respond to the allegations later in the day. He said neither Rane nor Nirupam has understood the DP and are trying to protect those builders against whom the corrections may go.
