The Bombay high court on Wednesday directed the Central Adoption Resource Agency (Cara) to process the foreign adoption applications of 10 children in Preet Mandir that were in pipeline before its licence was revoked.
Chief justice, Mohit Shah, directed Cara to complete the process before January 11. Cara's no-objection certificate (NOC) is a pre-requisite for parents to file petitions for taking the children. The 10 cases include one HIV positive child and some children with special needs.
Preet Mandir’s licence for foreign adoptions was revoked on May 20 this year following allegations of malpractices in adoption process.
The court had issued similar order on November 26 for 16 other foreign adoptions.
The matching of adoptive parents and the 10 children was done before the revocation.
The aggrieved adoptive parents then went to the court seeking justice. The court felt that these children should not languish in orphanages when they have already matched with adoptive parents.
In another case, a Kenyan family had filed petition against Cara seeking NOC. When it did not get any response, they filed a case, said their counsel Shirin Merchant. The court has asked Cara to clear this case by January 6.
