Civic-run hospitals face acute staff shortage as 5,718 posts lie vacant

In a report submitted to the standing committee of BMC, it has been revealed that a total of 5,718 posts are lying vacant in civic-run hospitals. The standing committee members had sought a detailed report of vacant posts in civic-run hospitals during its weekly meeting held earlier this month.

As per the report submitted by the health department of BMC, of the total 29,155 posts in all civic-run hospitals, 23,437 posts have already been filled while 5,718 posts are lying vacant.

According to the report, KEM Hospital in Parel tops the list as 1,085 posts are vacant of the total 5,039 positions. This is followed by Lokmanya Tilak Hospital, Sion, where 920 posts of 3,774 are yet to be filled. Similarly, Nair Hospital in Mumbai Central has 3,443 posts available while the vacant spots stand at 794.

Hindu Hriday Samrat Balasaheb Thackeray Medical College in Vile Parle has 461 posts of which 156 lie vacant. Parle's medical college which is also known as Cooper Medical College and Hospital has been facing an acute shortage of doctors and several departments have been functioning without a department of head for the past few months.
