After complaints of presence of fungus and germs in its Ghatkopar swimming pool, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to set up a laboratory to test  the water daily.

As part of the conditions to be laid while issuing tenders, expected next week, the civic body said the bidding contractors will have to test water samples daily to ensure that there are no complaints. “The contract period of the agency maintaining the pool has expired. So, we will have to appoint a firm again,” said SS Shinde, joint municipal commissioner, after a meeting with the manager and members of the pool on Thursday.

The pool was closed for members from last Saturday to Wednesday following grievances about fungus and germs in the pool as there was no chlorine in the water to treat it. The corporation though had claimed that it had to shut the pool because of the receding water level caused by ‘leakage’ and technical snag in its filtration plant.

“The complaints of fungus and germs are not new. We would face the problem almost every 15 days over the past six months. So, we voiced the concerns to the higher municipal authorities,” said a member, who was part of the group which called on Shinde.

The member was happy over the new decision. “We are happy that they will take samples of the water daily,” he said.

The pool has around 6,000 members. The BMC charges Rs3,520 annual fees from members. Children up to 12 years, retired and serving municipal staffers and senior citizens get 50% concession in fees.

POOL STORY
The swimming pool in Ghatkopar has been operational since 1977. It is 72m in length and its maximum depth is 18 feet. Members can swim in three slots 6 am-10 am, 2:30 pm-4.15 pm (only for women) and 5pm-6.45 pm. A person is allowed to swim for 45 minutes in a day.

The BMC manages its Ghatkopar, Dadar (Shivaji Park), Chembur and Kandivli swimming pools directly. Out of these, the one in Chembur has been shut for few years. Three other pools in Andheri, Goregaon and Mulund are managed by private trusts.
