Security at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), which has been described as being on the “terror hitlist”, has been increased...by providing the security agency in charge with five motorcyles to patrol the institue’s premises!

Mumbai police has given these five motorcycles to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), which is in charge of security of BARC, after the CISF said it was facing a shortage of vehicles for patrolling.

The CISF had also demanded light vehicles, but they are yet to be sanctioned.

A senior police officer told DNA: “Though the sanctioning of light vehicles will take some time, we have given them the motorcycles temporarily.”

He said the CISF already had heavy vehicles, but these were “not suitable for fast patrolling and inaccessible in some interior parts of BARC”.

The officer said police personnel were regularly interacting with the agencies involved in the security of BARC.

“This includes sharing intelligence and locating probable loopholes in security. Acting on our information that the creek near BARC was vulnerable, the coast guard provided one ship and an interceptor boat.”
