While students appearing for examinations are a harried lot, over the past few days their aggravation has increased as many students appearing for Stds X and XII board exams, are down with chicken pox.

Calls from anxious parents and students are flooding the board helplines, while the board has made special arrangements at examination centres for such students and may provide writers to them.

Harried parents and desperate students are calling in asking the board what can be done if they are down with pox. Most of the calls have come from centres in Dadar and Dombivli.

“They are scared that they might have to miss the exam. But we have reassured them that even if students are down with chicken pox, they will be allowed to sit for the exams,” said a member of the helpline.

To ensure that the disease does not spread to others, those down with chicken pox will be seated separately. In case a student has a severe case of chicken pox, writers might be provided to him/her.

“The chief conductors of examination at the respective centres have been given the authority to assign a writer for students who are unable to write their own paper because of the boils. Centres can also make other arrangements,” said a board official.

Doctors say that the chicken pox virus is in the air due to the rising heat and humidity and they are getting many cases of it and viral diarrhoea among children.

Dr Vijay Yewale said, “Chicken pox is not unusual this time of the year. Its virus — varicella zoster — surfaces after winter when temperatures begin to rise. I have seen a 30% increase in the number of chicken pox cases over the past few days. Parents need to be careful.”

Dr Tanu Singhal, from Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, said, “Viral fever was on the rise due to the sudden climatic changes. We are getting more cases of viral conjunctivitis and chicken pox. Since exams are under way, students should avoid outside food, eat leafy vegetables and sleep well.”
