City crime branch sleuths on Tuesday arrested gangster Chhota Shakeel's brother-in-law Salim Mohammad Iqbal Qureshi alias Salim Fruit in a case where a Mahim-based doctor was threatened by the Shakeel gang in 2004 to cough up Rs25 lakh.
According to joint commissioner of police, crime, complainant Atulchandra Kulkarni runs a clinic in Mahim and on September 13, 2004, he received international calls from one Vicky alias Aftab Alam Mohammad Ayub. Ayub claimed to be calling from Nairobi and told the victim to cough up Rs25 lakh and hand it over to shooter Sarju alias Nasir Abdul Majid Shaikh, or else he would be eliminated.
The victim informed the police about the threat after which a trap was laid near a hotel in Sion on September 24 and Sarju along with his accomplice Faisal Ismail Nakhwa were nabbed, said additional commissioner of police KMM Prasanna.
"Probe revealed that Sarju was in contact with Vicky and Mohammad Junaid, who used to operate from Dubai. In the same case on September 27, one Faisal Salim Thakur got arrested and two more persons identified as Mohammad Junaid and Latif Khatri were caught after they came to Mumbai from Dubai in 2007," said deputy commissioner of police, Dhananjay Kulkarni.
"Charge sheet was filed in the court and Fruit remained wanted in the case. He was, therefore, arrested. Fruit (41), a resident of Grant Road, is in police custody till March 8," said police inspector Vinayak Vast.
