The police have arrested a 41-year-old interior designer from Chembur on charges of raping a 26-year-old woman on the pretext of marrying her. The man was produced in a local court on Monday, which remanded him police custody till January 1.

The police said Deepak Alhat, a resident of Navjeevan Society, is married and has a 16-year-old son.  Alhat had come in contact with the complainant, who hails from hails from Amaravati and had come to come to Mumbai for further studies, two years ago.

Pralhad Panaskar, senior police inspector of Chembur police station, said Alhat had maintained a physical relationship with the woman, saying he would divorce his wife and marry her. He had also allegedly made the woman undergo an abortion about a year-and-a-half.

The complainant, who is currently three months pregnant, approached the police on Sunday after she realised that Alhat was not keen to marry her and was only giving false assurances, leading to the man’s arrest.
