Centre snub for cessed buildings FSI in Mumbai
The state government had recently decided to increase the FSI of cessed buildings in Mumbai’s island city from 2.5 to 3. This was seen as a major boost to the redevelopment of these buildings.
In a major setback to the state government, the central government’s ministry for environment and forests (MoEF) has declined permission for more floor space index (FSI) to those cessed buildings which area in the Coastal Regulatory Zone (CRZ) areas. This decision may affect the redevelopment of close to 3,000 buildings in the island city.

The island city at present has about 14,995 cessed buildings which are either dilapidated or old.
According to sources, minister for environment and forests Sanjay Deotale, state MoEF secretary Valsa Nair Singh and UDD principal secretary TC Benjamin have been pursuing the matter with the central government and they are likely to apply again for these CRZ-restricted buildings to get a higher FSI.
