For a jeweller from Dahanu, there really is no life without a cell phone.

In a miraculous incident, a Nokia mobile phone was all that stood between him and certain death when he was shot at from point-blank range on Friday night.

According to the Dahanu police, Jayant Soni, 45, a resident of Irani area in Dahanu, owns a jewellery shop near his residence. Due to many such shops being robbed in the area recently, Soni used to take the gold jewellery home at night. On Friday, at 8.30pm, Soni was walking home with the ornaments when he was intercepted by a gang of six robbers.

They tried to snatch the cloth bag, but when Soni resisted, one fired at him with a country-made pistol.

The bullet brushed his left forehand and hit the left side of his chest. Luckily for Soni, he had kept his mobile phone in the shirt pocket.

The robbers, sensing further trouble, fled into the darkness.
