The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday filed a closure report of the case involving Nitesh Rane, in which the politician had allegedly opened fire at Shamim Chintu Shaikh, a member of his party Swabhiman Sanghatana, in his office. Nitesh is the son of Maharashtra industries minister Narayan Rane.

Speaking to dna, a spokesperson from Rane's office claimed that this move came after Sheikh in his voluntary statement had informed the investigating agency that he wanted to withdraw his complaint.

"After Shaikh decided to withdraw is complaint, we had moved the Bombay high court for quashing of the FIR, which was registered against Rane. However, the CBI while arguing before the high court had urged the court to reject the application for quashing of the FIR, since the agency itself was about to formally close the issue by filing the closure report in the case."

The court, accordingly, accepted the report and has kept back the matter to May 29.

According to Shaikh's complaint filed before the Powai police on September 23, 2010, Nitesh had allegedly shot at him twice at the Sanghatana's Khar office and a bullet grazed his cheek, injuring him.

The CBI had registered an FIR against Nitesh under various sections of the IPC, including 307 (attempt to murder), after the high court transferred the probe to the agency from the crime branch in March 2011, saying it needed to be deeply investigated.

However, in March 2012, CBI filed a closure report before a magistrate's court stating there was no evidence or eyewitnesses to prove the case against Rane. Shaikh challenged this report, and in August 2013, the magistrate court rejected CBI's closure report and asked the agency to re-investigate the matter.
