It is cliché to complain about snarls in the city but one particular signal has breathed fresh life into public rancour over traffic.
This is the dreaded five-way Elphinstone junction on Senapati Bapat Road, located where the Indiabulls Centre is. Upon this signal converge vehicles from Prabhadevi and Dadar West, to go eastward to Elphinstone Road and eastward to Parel.
If you take a left at this signal from SB Road, it should take you to Elphinstone (now Prabhadevi) railway station and onward, but that is if you can brave the wait, which seems to be interminable.
The signal was always heavy-duty. But ever since Delisle Bridge shut down, commuters who would turn a left at a parallel road ahead (at Peninsula Corporate Park) must now make the turn here, forcing the slim route to absorb traffic it was never meant to handle.
Metro diggings haveonly made things more unbearable.
Things have gotten so out of hand that one easily spends over half an hour up three quarters of it, waiting for the light to turn green. When it does, one barely moves a few inches before it turns red again. Repeat the process at least thrice and you have a shot out of here.
DNA decided to test its patience at the signal, like tens of thousands of other motorists. For four days at different hours, we tracked how much time it took us to cross it and move across Elphinstone and come out on the Parel side.
Between noon and 3 pm, the wait was up to 35 minutes. This when some people abandon their vehicles in disgust and decide to hoof it. Road rage is common here. Abuses fly freely. Some commuters utilise the time by catching a siesta, while their taxi meters keep running.
