A suspended income-tax deputy commissioner, who was accused in a disproportionate assets case and facing trial in a CBI court for the past 11 years, died in April.

The judge and public prosecutor AA Ansari were discussing how to end the trial and were deciding when to get the remaining witnesses.
The son of the accused produced the death certificate dated April 24, which was issued by the Thane Municipal Corporation. The court has ordered the CBI to file a report before it so as to abate the matter. The court has further said that no further date would be given in this respect.
As per the prosecution, the CBI had found over Rs25 lakh in the names of Vishwakarma, wife Amravati Devi and sons, Santosh and Sunil.
Vishwakarma had joined as an income-tax officer in 1991 and became an assistant commissioner in 1995. He was suspended in March 2002 when he was a deputy commissioner in Valsad, Gujarat.
The CBI said he had hoarded the money by using corrupt means and abusing his position as a public servant from 1991 to February 24, 1999, when the case was initiated against him.
The CBI investigated the case for three years and filed the chargesheet on April 16, 2002. Vishwakarma filed for discharge after which the charges were framed in the case on February 16, 2008.
Eight witnesses were examined in the case so far.
