The demolition of cattle sheds in Borivali has begun following Supreme Court's order, as per BMC. This drive will not only mark clearing of the lands encroached upon by several cattle sheds running illegally, but will also permanently stop the flow of cattle waste in Dahisar river, which was a major concern.

As per Ramakant Biradar, assistant municipal commissioner, R/Central ward, in around six months they plan to clear all the sheds. "The top court has not only rejected the pleas filed by few owners but has also asked about ongoing demolitions. While we have been carrying out such drives earlier too, full fledged action has been initiated since last week," he said, informing that on Tuesday they cleared a 4000 sq feet tabela along Dahisar river behind Shrikrishna Nagar Complex on Western Express Highway, and there are around 20 to 22 odd tabelas that will soon be taken into consideration too.

BMC officials informed that all the cattle shed owners had already been asked to shift to Dapcheri and yet several refused to vacate. All cattle sheds are operating without permissions and some are allowed to built sheds. "There are more than 500 cattles in our ward in these sheds. Since December we have seized 22 buffaloes from cattle sheds in R/Central ward and sent them to Malad cattle pound. The notices for vacating the land and shifting the cattle has already been given to the owners," Biradar said.

Meanwhile the demolitions being initiated have brought a sigh of relief for residents of Shrikrishna Nagar Complex, a large residential area which is located close to several cattle sheds. The residents could barely keep their windows open due to the stench from dung enveloping the area. The members of River March have also been fighting for removal of these sheds."We have been raising concerns over these sheds dumping all the cattle wastes including carcasses of young male buffaloes in the Dahisar river, which was responsible for polluting the river and impacting its biodiversity. We are glad that BMC is finally taking action over this," said Vikram Chogle, BJP leader who is also a part of the River March movement.
