Prominent radiologist Dr Suleman Merchant, head of the department of Radiology at Lokmanya Tilak Memorial Medical College and Hospital, Sion, says the hope lies with the next generation. "Noise pollution not only takes a toll on the children but also affects elders equally. It directly affects the nerves, causing abnormalities in people. The only way to curb that is self discipline."

Speaking about the noise pollution during festive seasons, Dr Merchant says, "If you are religious enough, you need not compete with volume. Bhakti needs to come from within. It need not be be displayed through loud speakers. It is high time people realise that they are not only disturbing society's peace, but also damaging their own mental peace."

"Apart from the festive season, people should discipline themselves against honking as well. One needs to understand that honking doesn't solve the problem, but just creates disturbance," he added.
