A 25-year-old woman was killed on Monday evening after the two-wheeler she was travelling on was hit by a car allegedly driven by a doctor near Girgaum chowpatty. The doctor, a woman, has been booked by DB Marg police. She has been asked to be present in court at a later date.

According to the police, the incident took place around 5pm on NS Purandare Marg near Cream Center Hotel when Komal Singh, the deceased, was travelling with her paternal cousin Aakash (23) on a bike (MH-01-AB-8614). Singh and Aakash live in BS Wadi chawl of RS Nimkar Marg.

Around the same time, Dr Lajja Shah, who lives near Malabar Hill and practises at a private hospital in the Girgaum area, was driving her Toyota Innova (GJ-15-CD-6030) towards her residence with her driver, identified as Mandal, seated besides her. Her car went on to hit the duo's bike causing them to fall. Komal bled severely from her mouth and nose.

"Shah got down from her vehicle, introduced herself as a doctor, and rushed Komal to a nearby dispensary. She was then transferred to Bhatia Hospital where she died. Komal had also sustained severe internal bleeding in the chest," said senior police inspector Suresh Hujband of DB Marg police.

Mandal, the driver, was taken to the police station where his statement was recorded. He maintained that it was his employer who was driving the vehicle. "The woman normally takes over the wheel and the driver sits besides her when she returns home from the hospital," added Hujband.

Shah has been booked for causing death due to rash and negligent driving. The offence is bailable. The police said they did not find the need to arrest her.
