The Indian Railways has said that it does not have enough resources and operational requirements to introduce a new train connecting Mumbai and Sawantwadi. Politicians from all political parties in the state had demanded an additional train on the route because of increasing crowds.

At present, the railways are running an additional train on the route till December 26. But they have categorically ruled out making it permanent.

“We have received a request for introducing a new train connecting Mumbai and Sawantwadi Road on Konkan Railway. We have examined it but did not find it feasible because of a lack of resources and operational constraints,” E Ahmed, minister of state for railways, said.

Making a statement in the Rajya Sabha, Ahmed said, “Mumbai and Sawantwadi Road are already connected by three pairs of trains. Railway officials said the existing Dadar-Sawanatwadi Road Special train is running up to December 26.”

Ahmed was replying to a query by Rajya Sabha member Ranjitsinh Vijaysinh Mohite Patil.

The special train was introduced during the Ganpati festival after Maharashtra revenue minister Narayan Rane and the Shiv Sena threatened to stage protests if additional Mumbai-Konkan trains were not introduced.
