Campion School celebrates 75th anniv today

Campion School in Fort that was instituted on January 20, 1943 by members of the Society of Jesuits with a mere 23 students has now grown into an establishment of 830 students. The school marks the completion of its 75 years on Tuesday.

When it just began, the school ran from a rental ground floor flat at 45, New Marine Lines and its first principal was the late Fr Joseph Savall. Until 1956, the school imparted Cambridge education to its students before switching to the ICSE board in 1957.

Paul Machado, the school's longest-serving principal, from 2003 to present, said, "Students come from Wadala, Worli and even Mahim. In the 1950s the school shifted to Wellesley House and Arthur House buildings. Earlier, the school was imparting education from grade three to eight and now it is imparting education from junior kindergarten to grade 10. Our alumni organisation is very active and they, along with the school, have decided to raise funds for the present and former teachers' health and other aid. On its 75th year celebration, the school is going to release a logo that will be used on our letterheads for a year."

Several renowned personalities are alumni of Campion School, some of them include former aviation minister Praful Patel, politician Dr Shashi Tharoor and builder Dr Niranjan Hiranandani, to name a few.

The event to mark the school's 75 years will take place on December 5 at NCPA at 6 pm, which will include the Governor of Maharashtra C Vidyasagar Rao releasing a special cover followed by the release of 75th year logo.

GIVING BACK

  • The school’s PTA introduced a program called 75 acts of kindness in which the school will reach out to less privileged citizens.
  • Dr Shashi Tharoor will address the audience.
