To financially empower the drought-hit farmers in Maharashtra and to cut down the middlemen in the trade of agricultural products, a weekly farmers' market will be held at Gaondevi maidan in Thane, every Saturday.
The uniqueness of these weekly farmers’ markets would be that 27 types of vegetables from Nashik, Palghar, Murbad, and from other drought-affected areas would be sold by the farmers themselves.
On August 6, be ready to buy farm fresh veggies at affordable rates from farmers at Gaondevi maidan. “Since everyone is aware about how the farmers suffer as the middlemen takes away the lion's share of the profit, we have decided to start these weekly markets in Thane,” said Thane-based MLA Sanjay Kelkar from BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party), who also heads the Sanskar NGO.
The initiative has been taken up jointly by Sanskar NGO (non-governmental organisation) and the Maharashtra state’s agricultural marketing board also known as Krishi Panan Mandal. “If the response is good to this market, then we will host such weekly bazaar at two to three more spots in Thane,” said Kelkar.
Sanskar NGO also hosts aamba mahotsav (mango festival), every year at Gaondevi maidan where farmers from Konkan and other parts of the state sell variety of mangoes to Thanekars directly. This annual event is looked forward to by not only Thanekars, but also by people from Mumbai and Navi Mumbai as people get fresh mangoes for 30 to 35% less than the market price. “Like aamba mahotsav, we hope that even this farmers’ market will receive a good response from Thane residents,” added Kelkar.
