In a failed robbery attempt, one out of three burglars who had broken into the house of a diamond merchant in Kalina has been admitted to a hospital by the owner of the house after which he shall be arrested by the Vakola police.

The injured accused whose identity has not been revealed by the cops, along with two of his unidentified accomplices, broke into the house of diamond merchant Nilesh Patel. When they realised that there is nothing worth pilfering, they took a break and feasted on eatables in the fridge and dozed off. They were woken up by the owners who returned early. In an attempt to flee, he jumped off the balcony after which he fractured his leg and fell unconscious while his accomplices escaped.

Patel lives in a rented flat on the second floor of Neel Shantiniketan building at Kalina situated close to the Mumbai University.

During the weekend, Patel along with his family had gone to Surat for some work. The burglars on finding no one at home decided to sneak inside in search of valuables and cash. However, soon they realised that there was nothing worth pilfering.

"After feasting, they decided to sleep and leave early in the morning. However, by a twist of fate, Patel returned home with family at around 5 am. Both owners and the burglars were taken aback — owners on finding the house in a messed up condition and burgers on the early arrival of the owners. Patel's wife tried to get hold of one of the burglars but in vain. Two of the accused managed to find a safe passage and got away by climbing down the pipe," said a police officer on condition of anonymity.

The third thief jumped off the balcony which did not have any safety grill. According to the police, the fall led to a leg fracture due to which he became unconscious. The police were alerted immediately after which the accused was rushed to VN Desai Hospital in Santacruz.

When contacted, Nilesh Patel refused to speak about the incident. Sources claim that Patel's flat is the only one in the building which did not have any security grill.

"Due to the fall, the aluminium roofs of the shops and hanging cables of the building suffered damages. We believe that the accused men are first time offenders. The accused is under treatment at the hospital and we are taking his statement. A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the accused has been booked for trespassing and housebreaking theft charges. Search for the absconding duo is underway," said the police officer.
