A demand that has been in existence for a long time — to bring redevelopment and rehabilitation projects a part of MahaRERA — has found a legitimate voice now. MHADA's Mumbai Board Chairman, Madhu Chavan, has written to the Chief Minister asking him, to allow the redevelopment projects of MHADA buildings under the DCR 33 (5) to be part of MahaRERA. Currently, only the sale component in rehabilitation scheme is part of MahaRERA.

There has been a demand to include redevelopment projects within MahaRERA's ambit for quite some time from housing activists. The reason behind this demand is that in cases of redevelopment, the tenants suffer a lot in the hands of non-cooperative developers. To tackle the situation, the tenants have to fight the cases legally which is time-consuming.

"I want all rehab portions of all projects to be registered with MahaRERA," said Chavan.

Earlier this week Chavan wrote another letter to the CM, asking him to allow the MHADA project in Dharavi to continue as it is. MHADA has been asked to handover Sector V, to Dharavi Redevelopment Project, which it was assigned to the latter for redevelopment. MHADA says that it should be allowed to construct these buildings. "We agree with the vision of the chief minister. My letter only demands that the buildings of which construction has been initiated by MHADA in Dharavi's sector V should be with MHADA till its construction," said Chavan.

The project comprises of five buildings, of which one has been completed and 358 slum dwellers have been rehabilitated in it. The remaining four buildings are in various stages of construction.
