Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation could have averted loss of human lives

If the BMC’s markets department had acted on time, the loss of innocent lives could have been averted.

The planning and design department (P&D) of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had asked officials to vacate the building stating that it is ‘dilapidated’. “We had written to the E ward office in July 2012 saying that the building is dilapidated and should be vacated immediately,” said S Bhattachraji, chief engineer, P&D department. Senior civic officials said that the officials from the E ward had written to the markets department.

“The officials from the market department also replied to the ward officials in October 2012 saying that they will vacate the building,” said a senior civic official. “Since they did not vacate the building for a month, the ward officials again reminded the Market officials in December 2012 and asked them to vacate the building at the earliest,” said the official.

Officials from the markets department said the building was supposed to be vacated once the repair work began.
