The second edition of the Rajarshi Shahu Book Festival will be held between January 1 and 4 on the Private High School ground here.

The festival's first edition last year saw an exciting response with books worth Rs3 crore sold in two days. This year, the organisers have set a target of Rs5 crore.

The book festival was initiated by deputy director (education) of Kolhapur division, Dinkar Patil. Now, a trust called as Rajarshi Shahu Book Festival (RSBF) has been formed for organising the festival every year.

The chairman of RSBF, DB Patil and deputy chairman, Sunilkumar Lavate told reporters that the book festival will be a sort of mini-sahitya sammelan for Kolhapur.

Lavate said 91 stalls have been booked, including some for English and Hindi books. There will be literary and
cultural events too.

Last year, more than 50,000 people visited the festival. "Accelerating the reading culture is the main aim of the festival. Schools and colleges have been actively involved in organising the festival, so more students will visit the festival," Lavate said.

He said publishers’ response is immense. "As many as 91 stalls were booked within a day. We couldn’t allot more due to lack of space," he said.
