The decision on name change from 'Bombay Natural History Society' to 'Mumbai Natural History Society', rests with the general body of Society, BNHS said here today.
The Society issued a statement in context of the agitation by Shiv Sena activists in BNHS premises yesterday.
"One newspaper states that BNHS has decided to replace 'Bombay' with 'Mumbai' in its name, after the Shiv Sena agitation. This is extremely untrue. The decision rests with the general body of BNHS. The same has also to be put up before the BNHS members spread across the country," a release by BNHS said.
"A newspaper has reported that BNHS general body is located outside India. This is also not true. All members of BNHS executive committee are based in India," it said.
Referring to a newspaper report that Shiv Sainiks had met BNHS a month ago demanding the name change, the Society said this was not true. BNHS has not received any communication before this event about such a demand, it said.
Meanwhile, BNHS has lodged an FIR with Colaba Police Station for criminal trespass and damage to property.
