The fight between those who are for Colaba-Bandra-Seepz Metro-3 and against the cutting of trees for a car shed at Aarey shall begin. The high court will start hearing around 12 petitions filed against Metro-3 from Tuesday.

This comes at a time when the Metro-3 is getting delayed due to the opposition for car shed at Aarey. The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation claims that a delay of a single day will result in a loss of Rs 4.23 crore. On the other hand, scores of Mumbaikars and environment activists are opposing the Aarey car shed as 2,646 trees will be chopped.

As per MMRC's calculations, the Rs 23,000 crore project includes Rs 50 lakh as operation loss, Rs 3.80 crore is loss due to contracts and escalations. The officials claim that their rolling stock has been designed and is going into manufacturing and November 2020 the stock needs to be in the depot.

On The Agenda

Petition seeking Aarey’s designation as a forest and shifting of car shed
No Development Zone: Petition challenging the decision to denotify 33 ha for Metro car shed
Tree cutting: Petition challenging BMC resolution on Aug 29 for cutting 2,646 trees at Aarey for car shed

An MMRC official said the rolling stock (trains) needs a depot as the Metro is a highly-integrated system. He also claimed that if the depot is not raised on time, they don't know what the actual delay in the deadline would be.
Andheri's Vishal Tibrewal of My Green Society NGO backed the project.

Tibrewal's NGO has been working on creating a city forest. He said that there should not be any delay in for Metro work. "There is no reason to further delay the Metro work that will bring so much ease of commuting. We will plant 10 times the trees that are being removed in Aarey and create a better city forest than that exists," he said.

But environmentalists and activists are eagerly hoping to receive a breather from Bombay High Court as many activists claimed that despite environmental violations MMRCL has been carrying out work at the site.

Zoru Bhathena a petitioner who filed a petition in Bombay High Court against the BMC's Tree Authority's decision clearing a proposal to remove 2,464 trees in Aarey said that as petitioners, they have placed all their grievances in front of the court.

"All the petitioners have raised different environmental concerns and violations carried out by MMRCL as well as BMC. Now its for the judiciary to decide," he said.
