The Bombay high court on Wednesday stayed admission for the remaining seats for the first year of the five-year law course for a day in Government Law College. The stay was following a petition filed by a student from Rajasthan challenging the deduction of 5% marks for applicants who have passed their XII exams from any other board except Maharashtra.

Swati Khinvasara, a student from Rajasthan who secured 88% in CBSE board, filed the petition after the GLC reduced 5% from her total percentage before considering her for admission.

Swati had applied for admission to GLC and when the third list was declared on July 4, she found that students who had secured lesser percentages had been given admission. Upon enquiry, she was told that since she had not passed her XII from Maharashtra Secondary School Board, 5% marks were deducted while giving admissions.

On inquiry, she was given a copy of decision take by Higher Technical Education Department dated June 14 stating the decision was taken by the local administration committee of GLC in 2005 and that the government and college are following the same.

The college expressed its inability to give admission to Swati on the basis of her actual marks secured by her. The judges remarked: “How can only one college do this?  It is causing inconvenience to students.”
