Bombay High Court denies bail to Peter Mukerjea, allows post-op care

In a relief of sorts for accused Peter Mukerjea alleged of murdering Sheena Bora, the Bombay High Court on Wednesday directed prison authorities to take him to a multi-speciality Cardiac hospital for post-operation treatment. A vacation court of Justice R I Chagla though adjourned the hearing on his bail plea till June 12. The court directed jail authorities to provide ambulance and escort Mukerjea, to Asian Heart Institute at BKC, for 26 sessions of a cardiac rehabilitation programme.

Mukerjea's in his plea mentioned that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) does not have evidence against him and cited medical conditions for seeking bail. Mukerjea, who is currently lodged in Authur Road jail. Advocate Shrikant Shivade appearing for Mukherjea argued "Bail is sought on medical grounds. As after the bypass surgery, sending him back to the jail would be dangerous as he would be prone to infections."

The agency opposed the plea and relied on a report of the hospital where he had undergone the bypass surgery, which said Mukerjea was being discharged from the hospital as he had recovered from the surgery.

Mukerjea has been in jail since his arrest in November 2015 for his alleged involvement in the killing of Sheena Bora, his wife Indrani Mukerjea's daughter from her previous relationship. According to the Central Bureau of Investigation, Bora was killed in April 2012 but the case came to light only in August 2015 when Indrani Mukerjea's former driver Shyamwar Rai spilt the beans after being arrested in another case.
