“A police team led by Rakesh Sharma succeeded in nabbing the deceased’s husband, Lotan Khan, on May 4 at a bus stand in Kolkata. Sharma’s team had received information that Lotan escaped to Kolkata by Shalimar Express from Lokmanya Tilak Terminus,” DCP (operation) Rajkumar Vhatkar of Mumbai Police said.

Meanwhile, the railway police held the father-son duo (also Bangladeshi nationals) from Govandi for killing Layja and dumping her body in a Churchgate bound local.

“The police team led by ACP Dattatray Sidam nabbed Kutus Khan, 65, and his son Noor Islam Khan, 35, from their hideout at Govandi before they could escape by Geetanjali Express to Kolkata,” DCP (western railway zone) Anil Tamaychekar said.

They were have been charged under sections 302 (murder), 201 (causing disappearance of evidence) and 120 (B)-(conspiracy). The Mumbai Central Railway court on Thursday remanded them to police custody till May 10.

Preliminary investigations reveal that Layja stayed with her husband Lotan Khan and her 11-year-old sister Rubina at Nallasopara. The couple had a big fight on the night of April 24 in front of Kutus Khan and Noor Khan. Lotan in a fit of rage strangulated Layza to death, Tamaychekar said.

During interrogation, Lotan confessed that he had strangled his wife and that he later killed his 11-year-old sister-in-law Rubina. He dumped his wife’s body in a Churchgate-bound local train and threw Rubina’s body in a nullah at Naigaon, Vhatkar said. A manhunt has been launched to nab Lotan’s associate Aslam.
