The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has urged citizens to prune trees scientifically in their premises. The request is on the basis of the statistics of the last monsoon where two-thirds of tree collapse and branch falling incidents were reported in the private premises. Six people lost lives last year, out of which three incidents happened due to trees on private land.

Though the citizens are facing summer heat and scarcity of the water, the civic body has already geared up for the monsoon work. Nullah cleaning has been started in many parts of the city. The BMC prunes the roadside tree as a precautionary measure for monsoon. But even after that, there are more than a thousand incidents of a tree collapsing and branch falling reported across the city every monsoon. Last monsoon 510 trees collapsed, out of which 367 or two-thirds were from the private land such as housing societies or industrial areas. Even most of the tree branch falling incidents reported from the private premises. Total 1077 instances of branch falling reported from June to September 2018, out of 706 branches were from private premises trees.

The BMC data shows that more than 70 per cent of trees that collapsed during the four months of monsoon were from private places. "Though the BMC takes precaution the majority of the incidents happened in the private premise. Hence we urged the citizen to prune trees properly with the prior permission from the civic body," said Jitendra Pardeshi from garden department. "The BMC provides tree pruning service but many housing societies do not take BMC's help to avoid charges. But it resulted in more tree collapse," said another official.

The BMC has already started tree pruning in their area as 1,85,333 trees are along the roadside. Additional municipal commissioner Vijay Singhal has ordered the officials to complete the tree pruning before the monsoon.
