MUMBAI: Thirty per cent of the seats in private schools built on Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)-owned lands will be decided by the civic body's education department.

According to a proposal that was cleared by the Improvement Committee of BMC on Thursday, the reserved seats should go through the education officer and the education department.

Congress corporator and Improvement Committee member Upendra Doshi said that the Corporation should keep a record of the seats and the school authorities should provide the names of the students, it has admitted under the reservation.

According to another proposal that was passed by the same committee, the Corporation will buy a plot of land reserved for a school for around Rs 5 crore at Bandra (West) in suburban Mumbai and construct a primary school for locals.

The Corporation has to acquire the plot before February 17, after which the reservation of the land lapses according to the Mumbai Town Planning Act (MRTP), and the owner of the land can use it in the manner in which the adjacent plot is used.
