Stalls set up along Muhammad Ali Road near Minara Masjid in South Mumbai during the holy month of Ramzan are known for their delicious food. People from across the city visit to enjoy their evenings.

The area sees a huge footfall during Ramzan and the civic administration has a tough time ensuring hygiene of food served, as well as making sure that the road and the footpaths are free from encroachment.

Udaykumar Shiroorkar, Assistant Commissioner of B ward, said that they will hold a meeting with all stakeholders, and direct them not to encroach the road. "We will instruct them that they can not extend their shops over the footpath and road, as this will hinder the smooth flow of traffic," said Shiroorkar.

Last year, too, the civic administration had warned all food stalls to adhere to the permissible space provided to each stall. "There was no problem last year as we had made it clear that there would be no compromise in the movement of traffic," he added.

Shiroorkar said that a yellow tape will be laid out on such streets and the stalls will not be allowed to cross the tape. "There is a need to fix their limits and this is the best way," said Shiroorkar. He added that cooking on road will not be permitted as well.

BMC's other departments, like the Solid Waste Department and the health department, will ensure that waste is properly collected and maintain the hygiene of food, respectively.

"Food stalls prepare food in the open, which could lead to serious health problems. So, we will ensure that their food is covered," said a senior official from the health department. He added that an advisory will be sent out to all food stall organisers.

Corporators will also be involved in ensuring the safety of the visitors. "We will ask them to ensure that most of the shops or stalls be within the permissible area," added the official.

Planning Ahead

  • A yellow tape will be laid out on such streets and the stalls will not be allowed to cross the tape
  • BMC’s Solid Waste Department and the health department will ensure that waste is properly collected and maintain the hygiene of food, respectively
