BMC to Bombay High Court: Quotations for BS IV not yet in

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has informed the Bombay High Court that Tata Motors and Ashok Leyland are not providing them with quotations for vehicles containing Bharat Stage (BS) IV emission norms.

The BMC has sought permission to continue using 211 vehicles like compactors and fire engines with BS III as they have not yet received the new vehicles which comply with the BS IV norms.

A division bench of Chief Justice Mohit Shah and Justice Roshan Dalvi has asked Leyland to send their representative by November 30.

Geeta Joglekar, advocate for the BMC, said that the manufacturers haven’t provided quotations since 2010. To which chief justice retorted, “You must not be paying them after they deliver the vehicles, hence they did not send the quotation.”

The advocate for Tata said, “The vehicles have to be made according to the specifications.”

Shiraz Rustomjee, counsel for Bombay Environmental Action Group, argued that the BMC had not placed the orders for new vehicles despite the fact that the BS IV came into force in September 2010.
