Around 27,000 square metre area under 23 flyovers across the city will see a complete facelift as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to beautify the area on the lines of Nanalal D Mehta flyover at Matunga. The civic body has decided to spend around Rs 14 crore on it.

Space beneath flyovers are mostly found occupied with parked vehicles or scrapped vehicles. With dust around it, it is also seen as a health threat for people living around it. With the successful example of the Nanalal D Mehta flyover at Matunga which has a garden and a 600-metre-long jogging track, the civic body has planned to create more such places.

As per the plan, around 27,023 sq metre area across 23 flyovers of the city will be beautified. According to officials from the Garden department of BMC, the total area is one fourth of the oval ground. “We will develop gardens between two pillars of the flyovers while in some places, vertical gardens have also been proposed,” said the official.

Pillars of the J J Flyover and of Byculla bridge will get vertical gardens and colourful lighting. In addition, other places with flyovers that will be beautified are Elphinstone, Worli, Anhderi, Goregaon, Kurla, Govandi, Chembur, Asalpha, Jagriti Nagar metro station and Dahisar.

The official also informed that around 950 sq metre playground area will also be developed beneath Santacruz-Chembur link road and an open gym area will be made at the Mankhurd T-Junction. Apart from the Mankhurd flyover, some other flyovers too will get an open gym.

The work will start soon and in the next six months, most of the flyovers will be beautified. “The beautification work includes some MSRDC flyovers too,” said the official.

The decision of beautification was taken by BMC chief Ajoy Mehta during his monthly meeting. He had directed officials to survey flyovers belonging to the BMC.
