These contractors have been assigned to transport garbage to the dumping ground
The solid waste management (SWM) department of BMC has taken action against seven contractors for illegally mixing construction debris in garbage to increase weight of the garbage. These contractors have been assigned to transport garbage to the dumping ground.
In total 24 instances, the civic found excess weight of garbage during surprise check.
A total seven contractors were found in illegal practice, and a case has also been registered against them in Kurla and Vikroli police station.
Vijay Singhal, additional commissioner (Eastern Suburb) of BMC had directed the SWM to carry our surprise check of vehicles, and carry out video shoot of the vehicles.
Vijay Balambar, deputy municipal commissioner of SWM said the step was taken following complaint from the dumping ground regarding mix of debris and muck in the garbage.
Actually, the civic body pays Rs 40 for transporting a ton of debris while Rs 875 for a ton of garbage. However, the contractors deputed to transport garbage reportedly mixed debris in the garbage to increase weight of garbage and charge more to the civic body for carrying less amount of garbage. The contractors are paid on the basis of quantity of garbage it carry.
The civic body had already set up latest technology to bring transparency in weight of waste being dumped at dumping ground everyday.
The investigation of video shoot revealed that a total 7 cases of illegal practice was found in K East, 5 cases in L ward, 4 cases in G South and 2 cases in P south ward. In addition, one case was also found in E, R Central, and R North.
