The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) new year gift for Mumbaikars is a 100% water cut in various wards from January 6 to 8, as the civic body undertakes underground work on a water tunnel.
On the bright side, the BMC claims that water supply to the city will be augmented once the work is over.
Municipal commissioner Swadhin Kshatriya said on Friday: “The BMC will undertake work on the Maroshi-Vakola-Mahim-Ruparel College tunnel 60 metre underground. We will replace the existing main valves of the tunnel with new Butterfly valves. This will augment water supply to the city and suburbs.”
There will be only 50% water supply to Dadar, Matunga, Mahim, Parel, Worli, Elphinstone Road, Prabhadevi, Lower Parel, Ghatkopar and Kurla from January 6-9, as these areas are dependent on the Ghatkopar reservoir.
Supply to Jogeshwari, Goregaon, Kandivli, Malad, Borivli and Dahisar will be curtailed by 10 %.
“Pressure will be lower than normal, and the duration of supply will be curtailed. Citizens should preserve water during this period. Supply timings for some of the zones may be rescheduled according to water supply levels in the service reservoirs,” Kshatriya said.
“The tunnel is virtually maintenance free and will facilitate uninterrupted water supply with better pressure.”
