The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) ambitious plans of constructing five flyovers in the city's western suburbs, seems to have taken a hit, thanks to the Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority's metro-2 project (Charkop-Dahisar). dna, in October last year, had reported about the civic body's plans to construct five flyovers between Goregaon and Borivli to decongest traffic snarls in the suburbs.

According to senior civic officials from the bridges department, the MMRDA is yet to decide if the metro stations would be elevated or underground. Many of the locations of the stations are coinciding with BMC's proposed flyover locations. Officials are waiting for a final word from the MMRDA before starting work on the project.

Chief engineer of bridges department SO Kori said once they get a clarity of the MMRDA's metro plans, they will start constructing the flyovers. "One option is to construct the flyovers across the road instead of constructing them along the link road. However, that won't solve all the problem," he said.

The civic body is ready with a feasibility report on the project and the estimated the cost of the project is Rs328 crore. The total length of all the flyovers sums up to 13km. The flyovers are planned over the traffic junctions to ease jams at Bangur Nagar in Goregaon and Mith Chowkie in Malad.

Chincholi Bunder in Malad, MG Road in Kandivli and Don Bosco junctions in Borivli are the other locations where the flyovers are planned. The project is set to reduce the traveling time on link road which is usually jammed in peak hours.

Another civic official said that the flyovers will be necessary once the Coastal Road comes up.
