The Bombay High Court on Monday had ordered a ban on all new constructions in the city until the civic body comes up with a plan to tackle the issue of waste management.
Members of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC's) standing committee have demanded that municipal commissioner Ajoy Mehta make a statement over the issue of dumping grounds in the city and make his stand clear on how the civic administration was planning to resolve this problem.
The Bombay High Court on Monday had ordered a ban on all new constructions in the city until the civic body comes up with a plan to tackle the issue of waste management.
On Wednesday, the corporators and members of the standing committee claimed that all of Mumbai is facing health issues, apart from the corporation facing a loss of revenue due to incompetent civic officials.
The issue was raised by Rais Shaikh, a Samajwadi Party leader in the BMC, through a point of order. Shaikh was supported by all the members of the committee, across all party lines.
"Apart from a loss of revenue, it is a major cause of embarrassment for the city, which is on the global map," Shaikh said.
