BMC conducts raids to check use of plastic bags, collects Rs 90,000 fine

Intensifying its drive against the usage of plastic and ensuring the implementation of plastic ban, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) conducted raids in the last week in Andheri are of the city and collected Rs 90,000 by way of fines.
Plastic bags weighing below 50 microns are banned and the flying squad of K-West ward conducted over 15 raids in the area to ensure the implementation of the ban.
Dr Sanjay Deshmukh, additional municipal commissioner, while talking to iamin said that the team seized over 70 kilograms of banned plastic bags. The raids were conducted after citizen groups and advanced locality management (ALM) bodies informed the civic body about the extensive use of plastic bags in the area.
Areas, including Navrang Talkies, Bhavan's College Road, Link Road and Civic Market, were scanned by the BMC squads. The team would weigh the seized plastic bags and fine shopkeepers Rs 5,000 for the first offence and Rs 10,000 for the second offence.
“Such raids will be conducted across all wards. The citizens are behaving pro-actively by informing us about the use of plastic bags,” Dehmukh said.
