The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has collected over Rs 1,67,000 in fines within a day of announcing that people who spit in open will be penalised.
The step was taken as part of measures to contain the further spread of coronavirus.
On Wednesday, BMC through its official Twitter handle had announced that "spitting in public space will attract a fine of Rs. 1,000 or detention u/s 189 IPC. While we do our best to ensure that no such activity takes place in the city, a little cooperation from Mumbaikars in these difficult times will help us go a long way in our fight against Coronavirus."
Meanwhile, two women in Mumbai on Thursday tested positive for coronavirus, taking the total number of confirmed cases in the state to 47. One woman returned from the United Kingdom, while the arrived from Dubai.
The total number of positive cases in India on Thursday climbed to 168. The pandemic has claimed over 8,900 lives globally while more than 2 lakh cases have been reported so far.
