Afreen (name changed), a 23-year-old visually impaired research scholar from the University of Mumbai, is waiting for the police to file a charge sheet against a man who tried to rape her at the Kalina campus three months ago. The police have five days to file the chargesheet, said her friends.
Meanwhile, the police has got the accused to sign a bond that he will refrain from repeated sexual assault.
On June 22, the accused Adeprakash Rajaram Yadav, armed with a gun, tried to rape Afreen but was stopped. He was later handed over to the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) police station and released on bail.
Subsequently, Afreen wrote a letter to the Women Development Cell (WDC) of the University of Mumbai. Kranti Jejurkar, chairperson, WDC, said, “I have got the letter and am now forwarding it to the BKC police station.” Speaking to DNA, Vinayak Sawde, senior inspector, BKC police station, stated, “She had to leave the city to join a PhD programme at Hyderabad before anything happened.”
